it draws from Jab Jab, a Grenadian J’ouvert tradition where people cover themselves in oil or tar, embodying the devil as a form of resistance and mockery of the oppressor.
Rooted in African and Caribbean history, this ritual turns the image of the “devil” on its head—transforming fear into power, shame into pride.
The figure’s black, reflective skin, mirrored hat, and horns reflect that legacy of defiance and survival.
This is a visual conversation with history, identity, and the strength of those who refused to be broken.
